Departure day — Tampa to Zurich overnight. Be at TPA by 16:15. Sleep on the plane.
✈️ TPA → ZRH · WK5 · 19:15 ✓ Edelweiss · A93YKJ
⚠️ docs5 passports must be valid through ~Oct 20, 2026 AND issued within last 10 years (kids' US passports are 5-year — verify before you leave the house). Bring: all passport printouts, Edelweiss conf A93YKJ, hotel confirmations, travel insurance cards, IDP if obtained at AAA Tampa.
13:30Leave home. Allow ~45 min to TPA + buffer. July is peak travel season — roads and curbside can be backed up.
14:30Arrive TPA — International Terminal F. Edelweiss Air (Swiss affiliate) check-in counters. International check-in typically closes 60 min before departure; arrive no later than 16:15. Check all 5 bags.
16:15Through TSA security → airside. TPA security is usually fast but July is unpredictable. Eat a real dinner here — better options than airplane food. Walk the concourse, let kids burn energy before the long flight.
18:45Board Edelweiss WK5. All 5 seats confirmed (A93YKJ). Set watches to CEST (+6h from Tampa) immediately on board. Flight time: ~9h 30 min.
19:15Depart. Sleep strategy: aim to sleep by ~21:30 Tampa time (~03:30 Zurich). Eye masks + neck pillows in carry-on. Melatonin for kids if used. 5–6h sleep possible before landing — this determines how Day 1 in Zurich goes.
carry-onPack in carry-on: all 5 passports + travel docs, meds, 1 change of clothes per person, chargers + adapters (Type J plugs for Switzerland), snacks, entertainment. Check everything else.

Land Zurich 10:25 AM. Passport control → train to city → check in. Jet-lag-friendly afternoon, anchored by a relaxed Lake Zürich cruise (no booking needed). Chocolate stop at Sprüngli. Early dinner and bed by 21:00. Rain/heat backup: Swiss National Museum.
✈️ Lands ZRH · 10:25 AM ⛵ Lake Zürich cruise · anchor (walk-on) ✓ MEININGER Zürich · 1033198565
10:25Land Zurich Airport (ZRH). Follow signs to Non-EU Passport Control (US passports). Swiss border control is typically efficient for tourists. Have all 5 passports open and ready.
~11:00Clear passport control + baggage claim. Head downstairs to the SBB train station inside the airport (follow green signs). Buy 5x single ZRH Airport → Zürich HB (CHF 6.80/person) or validate Swiss Travel Pass here. Trains run every ~10 min.
~11:15Train to Zürich HB (~12 min). Then tram or S-Bahn to MEININGER Zürich Greencity, Albisriederstrasse 199. Google Maps works perfectly in Switzerland.
~12:00Arrive MEININGER Zürich Greencity (conf 1033198565). Official check-in is 15:00 — ask about early access. If room not ready, leave bags with the front desk. Freshen up in the lobby.
12:30Lunch — keep it light and close. Swiss prices: CHF 20–35/person at a café. Migros or Coop supermarket nearby for cheap sandwiches + stock up on snacks, water, Swiss chocolate for the week.
⚠️ jet lagDo not nap. Stay awake until at least 21:00 local. A nap now ruins the next 2 days. Get sunlight, move around, use coffee. This is the price of an easy week ahead.
13:30Chocolate stop — Confiserie Sprüngli (Paradeplatz, open Saturday). Luxemburgerli macarons + hot chocolate. Keeps the chocolate treat for the kids in place of the Lindt museum.
⚠️ LindtLindt Home of Chocolate (Kilchberg) — NOT available. Sold out for both Zurich windows (Jul 4 & Jul 19) as of late June. Still being monitored in case a slot opens up — if it does, it could swap in here. The lake cruise is the anchor in the meantime.
14:30⛵ Lake Zürich cruise (ZSG) — the afternoon anchor. Depart Bürkliplatz pier. No reservation needed — these are large lake steamers; buy at the pier desk, on board, or online, and just walk on. No real queue (worst case you wait for the next sailing — they run roughly hourly in summer). Take the 90-min "Short" round trip (or the 60-min "Mini" if energy is low). Everyone sits, open-air deck, Alps on a clear day — ideal for jet-lagged kids. ~CHF 8–14/adult, kids ride free/discounted; free with Swiss Travel Pass.
16:30Lakeside promenade + Lindenhof — easy stroll back through the Seepromenade and up to the Lindenhof viewpoint in the Old Town. Gelato, feed the swans. No agenda.
☔ backupRain/heat backup: Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum), right by HB — air-conditioned, Swiss history from Celts to modern; the armor & weapons hall is a kid-pleaser. Swap it in if the weather doesn't cooperate with the cruise.
19:00Early dinner — something simple and nearby. Zeughauskeller (historic beer hall in the Altstadt, huge Swiss portions, great for kids: Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, Rösti, enormous pretzels) or a neighborhood pizza place near the hotel.
21:00Bed. Full stop. Kids will already be asleep. Don't let anyone push past 22:00. Tomorrow is the last easy day before 3 hard Alpine days start Monday.

Zurich — full day. Old Town morning (Grossmünster tower + Fraumünster), Bahnhofstrasse & Lindenhof, Swiss dinner. Pack for Alps tonight.
⛪ Old Town morning
⚠️ SunSunday in Zurich: most shops closed (Bahnhofstrasse boutiques shut, Migros closed). Lakefront, restaurants, museums, and the boat cruise all operate normally. Actually a lovely day to be out — far fewer crowds than Saturday.
08:30Breakfast. Café Sprüngli on Bahnhofstrasse (open Sunday) — Zurich's most famous confectioner. Pastries, coffee, hot chocolate for kids, Luxemburgerli macarons to try. A 10-min tram ride from the hotel.
09:00Grossmünster — climb the Karlsturm tower early (CHF 5) for lake + Alps views before the crowds and before Sunday services. Then the Fraumünster across the river for the Chagall stained-glass windows. ⚠️ Tourist visits are limited during Sunday morning service — check the day's times and go around it. (Lake cruise already done on Jul 4 — today is the Old Town day.)
11:45Back at Bürkliplatz. Seepromenade walk south along the lake — parkland, families, dogs, local Sunday scene.
12:30Lunch. Pick up a picnic from a bakery/kiosk and eat at one of the park benches along the lake. Or sit down at a restaurant near the water — Sunday lunch in Zurich is leisurely.
14:00Bahnhofstrasse stroll — the famous shopping street. Shops closed on Sunday but the street itself is gorgeous: wide, tree-lined, glass storefronts. Walk from HB end to Bürkliplatz and back (~1.5 km). Turn onto Rennweg and Augustinergasse for the painted medieval alley facades.
15:00Lindenhof — hilltop Roman square above the Limmat, the best free panoramic viewpoint in the Altstadt. Locals play boules here on Sunday afternoons. Kids can roll on the grassy terrace. 10-min walk from Bahnhofstrasse.
16:30Optional: Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum, open Sun 10–17, free for kids under 16) — Swiss history from Celts to modern. The medieval armor and weapons room alone is worth it for the older kids.
19:45Dinner — Zeughauskeller (BOOKED, table for 5, 19:45). Historic 15th-century arsenal beer hall in the Altstadt — hearty Swiss classics (Zürcher Geschnetzeltes + rösti, sausages, schnitzel), big portions, lively family atmosphere. Last city night before 3 nights in the mountains.
⚠️ tonightPack all bags for Lauterbrunnen. Tomorrow checkout by 09:30 for the train. Each kid should have a day backpack for the Alps; main luggage travels with you on the train. Review Jul 7 Jungfraujoch plan — confirm bookings are set.

Big mountain day — cog train to Wengen → Männlichen gondola → Eiger Panorama Trail hike → Kleine Scheidegg lunch (Eiger North Face above you) → cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch (3,454 m) through tunnel inside the Eiger.
🏔️ Wengen → Männlichen → Eiger Trail → Kleine Scheidegg → Jungfraujoch
⚠️ earlyDepart by 08:00. July afternoon clouds roll in and Jungfraujoch disappears. Early = clear summit. Do not snooze.
08:00Quick breakfast at Airbnb or grab a bakery item on the way to the station.
08:15Cog railway Lauterbrunnen → Wengen (15 min) — steeply uphill through Alpine meadows, the valley floor dropping away below.
08:40Männlichen gondola from Wengen (~5 min to top, 2,230m). Optional 30-min detour: walk 1 km to Männlichen Summit (+100m) — 360° panorama of the Bernese Alps. Best viewpoint in the region and it's easy walking.
~09:30Eiger Panorama Trail — Männlichen → Kleine Scheidegg. 4.9 km, gentle downhill, ~1h 30 min. The Eiger North Face gets larger with every step. Paved path, suitable for the 8yo with no complaints. Benches every 500m.
~11:00Lunch at Kleine Scheidegg — several restaurants, the Eiger wall looms directly above you. Rösti, hot soup, kids' menus. One of the great lunch settings anywhere. Allow 1 hour; eat before boarding the summit train.
~12:15Cogwheel train Kleine Scheidegg → Jungfraujoch (35 min) — bored through the Eiger, with two intermediate stops where windows are cut into the cliff face for mid-tunnel views. Kids will find this impressive.
~13:00Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe (3,454 m): Aletsch Glacier overlook (longest glacier in the Alps, visible from the platform), Ice Palace (carved rooms and sculptures inside the glacier), Sphinx Observatory deck (glass-enclosed, windy outside), snow play area. Allow 2–3h. Bring the extra layer — it's ~5°C up here.
~16:00Descent: cogwheel train → Kleine Scheidegg → Wengen → cog railway → Lauterbrunnen. Dinner in the village. Everyone will be tired — keep it simple.
⚠️ gearBring warm layers for everyone (the 8yo especially) — wind chill at 3,454m can hit freezing even in July. Sunscreen mandatory: UV intensity at altitude is extreme. Water + snacks in backpacks.

Catania — La Pescheria fish market (morning only!), Piazza del Duomo, granita & brioche, afternoon rest. Pack tonight — early departure tomorrow for Etna.
⚠️ signFerrini Home rental agreement must be signed before today. Call +39 348 113 7291 if not yet returned.
07:30La Pescheria — Catania's legendary fish market behind Piazza del Duomo. Opens 6 AM, best between 7:30–10 AM, closes ~13:00. Swordfish, tuna, sea urchins, octopus piled on black lava-stone slabs. Incredibly loud, chaotic, theatrical — one of Europe's great markets. The kids will be equal parts grossed out and transfixed. Go early for the full experience.
08:30Breakfast: granita con brioche at any café on Piazza del Duomo. This is the quintessential Sicilian morning. Try almond or pistachio granita. The brioche is puffy and sweet — you tear the top off and dip it. Do not accept a croissant.
09:30Piazza del Duomo — Fontana dell'Elefante (Catania's lava-stone elephant mascot, dating to Roman times), Baroque cathedral facade. Spacious square, good for kids to run while you people-watch.
10:30Via Etnea — Catania's main boulevard, paved with lava stone, running arrow-straight toward Etna. Gelato, window shopping, the volcano visible at the far end on clear mornings. Walk 20 min north and back.
12:00Lunch: arancine (crispy fried rice balls, best in the world here), pasta alla Norma (eggplant + ricotta salata + tomato), or a sit-down trattoria near the market. Budget €12–20/person.
14:00Rest indoors — Catania in July runs 33–38°C. Hotel pool if available, air-conditioned café, or a nap. Resume after 17:00 when the city cools and comes alive again.
17:30Optional: Monastero dei Benedettini di San Nicolò l'Arena (Via Crociferi area, 10 min walk) — one of Europe's largest Baroque monasteries, with Roman ruins visible through glass floors. Free or small fee. The courtyard alone is extraordinary.
19:30Aperitivo → dinner. Sicilian specialties: polpo alla brace (grilled octopus), pasta con le sarde (with sardines, pine nuts, raisins — sounds odd, tastes incredible), or pizza with pistachio cream (a Catania thing). Via Etnea area or Piazza Teatro Massimo.

08:15Depart CTA → Rifugio Sapienza (Etna south flank, SP92 via Nicolosi). 45 km, ~50 min. The road climbs steadily through lava fields — increasingly lunar as you gain altitude. Temperature drops noticeably.

09:15Funivia dell'Etna cable car (FAST TRACK tickets, conf 20260523.01319–01323). Ascent to 2,500m in ~15 min. Lava fields below, smoke rising from craters above. This is an active volcano.
09:304×4 Unimog bus from the upper cable car station to ~2,900–3,000 m. ~20 min ride across raw lava terrain. Guide stays with the group. Stop near Torre del Filosofo: lunar black lava landscape, active craters visible, 360° view of Sicily and the Ionian Sea.
09:50Explore summit area — ~1h. Stay on marked paths. Loose lava underfoot — good closed-toe shoes required. The 8yo will find the terrain challenging but it's doable with encouragement and a hand. The smell of sulfur is real.
⚠️ altIf cable car is closed (wind / volcanic activity): explore the Rifugio Sapienza lava fields on foot — still impressive. Depart earlier toward Taormina for more afternoon beach time.
11:304×4 return → cable car down → back at Rifugio Sapienza ~12:15. Warm up with a coffee or soup at the refuge restaurant.
12:30Lunch at Rifugio Sapienza (basic restaurant on-site) or pack sandwiches and eat in the car on the descent. Depart for Taormina by 13:00.

15:30Drive up to Taormina (~15 min, steep hairpin road). Park at Lumbi or P2 garage (€1.50/h). Alternatively: cable car from Mazzarò beach (€6/pp, more scenic).
16:00Corso Umberto (Taormina's main pedestrian street), Piazza IX Aprile (the balcony over the sea and Etna — the defining Taormina image). Gelato at Bam Bar on Via di Giovanni: pistachio, mandatory, do not skip this.

09:30Arrive at Teatro Antico di Taormina entrance. Check in — 2 adult tickets (Intero) + kids under 18 free. Ref #3733581. Guided tour begins at 10:00. 3rd-century BC Greek theatre with Etna framed through the ancient stone arches and the Ionian Sea beyond — arguably the most beautiful ancient site in the world. Allow 1.5–2h with guide.
11:30Corso Umberto stroll from the theatre. Taormina's main pedestrian drag — ceramics, food shops, narrow alley views to the sea on both sides. Stop at Piazza del Duomo (small medieval fountain, Baroque cathedral facade).
12:00Cable car from Taormina down to Mazzarò (€6/pp one way, ~5 min). Then 5-min walk to Isola Bella — tiny island connected to the shore by a narrow pebble sandbar at low tide. The iconic Taormina postcard. Clear turquoise water, pebble beach (bring water shoes!). Stake out a sunbed spot early — gets very crowded by 13:00.
12:30Swim at Isola Bella. Snorkeling is good around the rocks of the island. Sunbeds for rent. Kids can explore the tidal rocks. This is the most beautiful swimming spot on the trip.
13:30Lunch at a beach bar in Mazzarò or cable car back up to Taormina for a restaurant. Budget €15–25/person. Avoid the tourist traps on the main drag — walk one street off Corso Umberto.
15:30Siesta — return to Giardini Naxos for the hottest 2 hours. Hotel pool, air conditioning, or rest. The 8yo especially will need this break.
18:00Golden hour in Taormina — return for the afternoon light on Piazza IX Aprile. Etna at sunset behind you, Ionian Sea in front. Exceptional for photos. Street musicians often play here in the evening.
20:00Dinner in Taormina (upscale) or Giardini Naxos waterfront (casual, great fish). The 15yo and 12yo may enjoy a late evening stroll along the Giardini Naxos seafront promenade afterward.

Drive south to Syracuse (1h 15 min). Neapolis Archaeological Park AM — Greek Theatre + Ear of Dionysius. Check into Ortigia. Evening island walk: Piazza del Duomo + Fonte Aretusa.
🚗 Giardini Naxos → Syracuse · 117 km · ~1h 15 min ✓ Palazzo Spagna · 5458.719.708
⚠️ ZTLOrtigia is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone) — rental car may not enter without authorization. You confirmed with Palazzo Spagna last night. If authorized: park in the hotel's designated spot. If not: park at Molo Sant'Antonio (outside Ortigia, free) and walk 10 min with luggage. Taxis cross freely.
08:30Check out Suite Home Panorama (Giardini Naxos). Load car.
08:45Depart → Syracuse. A18 south past Catania ring road, continue A18 south. Flat, easy drive. 117 km, ~1h 15 min.
10:00Arrive Syracuse. Park near Parco Archeologico della Neapolis (Molo Sant'Antonio or along Via Elorina). Do NOT attempt Ortigia until you've confirmed the ZTL access with Palazzo Spagna.
10:15Neapolis Archaeological Park — open 9 AM–7 PM, last entry 6 PM. ~€17/adult, kids free under 18. Walk-up fine for morning entry. Buy water at the entrance kiosk — it's exposed and hot.
10:30Greek Theatre of Syracuse (5th century BC) — larger than Taormina's, carved directly from the hillside limestone. No mountains or sea framing it, but the sheer scale is more impressive — this seated 15,000 people. Allow 45 min.
11:30Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dionisio) — an enormous S-shaped cave, 65m deep, 23m high, carved into the rock. Legendary acoustics: clap once and hear 5+ echoes. Whisper at the entrance and the sound travels the full length of the cave. Tyrant Dionysius supposedly used it to spy on prisoners. The kids will love the echo test.
12:00Latomia del Paradiso — the ancient stone quarries, now a lush garden. Orange and lemon trees growing inside what were once prison pits. Cool, shaded, peaceful. A good contrast to the exposed theatre.
13:15Drive to Ortigia island. Park at Molo Sant'Antonio (€1.50/h) or hotel parking if ZTL authorized. Walk to Palazzo Spagna for check-in (conf 5458.719.708, PIN 4928).
14:00Check in. Rest during peak heat — Ortigia's stone streets have minimal shade at 2–4 PM and the island holds the heat.
17:00Ortigia evening walk: Piazza del Duomo (Greek temple columns still embedded inside the Catholic cathedral — you can see the ancient fluted columns through the Baroque walls), then south to Fonte Aretusa — an ancient freshwater spring literally at the seashore, papyrus growing in the water, ducks swimming. Completely unexpected. Then walk the seafront promenade.
19:00Aperitivo at a waterfront bar. Ortigia specialty: fresh sea urchin (riccio) on bread — extraordinary if the adults are willing. Also: swordfish carpaccio, Sicilian olives.
20:30Dinner in Ortigia. Via della Maestranza has multiple excellent trattorias. Budget €25–35/person. Ortigia at night, lit up with the sea around it, is one of the trip's finest moments.
⚠️ tomorrowLong drive to Agrigento (~2.5–3.5h depending on Noto stop). Pack tonight. Depart ~09:30–10:00. Consider the optional Noto stop (+45 min, worth it if energy allows). Valle dei Templi visit is planned for late afternoon — arrive Agrigento by 13:30.

🚗 Syracuse → (Noto) → Agrigento · 133–165 km · 2.5–3.5h ✓ Villa Palmi · 6751.558.452
⚠️ driveLongest drive day in Sicily (~2.5–3.5h). Depart no later than 10:00. Bring car entertainment for the kids. Do not try to visit Valle dei Templi at midday — 38°C in July, harsh light, brutal. Golden hour visit is the entire plan.
09:00Morning: last quick Ortigia walk if desired — 7 AM light on the Baroque facades is beautiful and the streets are empty. Or just pack and go.
09:45Check out Palazzo Spagna. Collect car. Depart Ortigia → SS115 south.
10:15Optional: Noto (30 km south, 30 min). UNESCO Baroque town — the most perfectly preserved in Sicily. Corso Vittorio Emanuele is a stage-set of golden limestone palaces all built to the same Baroque plan after the 1693 earthquake. Allow 45 min. Stop at Caffè Sicilia (Italy's most famous gelateria: pistachio, jasmine, almond — queue is worth it).
~11:30Depart Noto (or Syracuse if skipping) → Agrigento via SS115 west, hugging the coast through olive groves and citrus orchards. From Noto: ~148 km, ~1h 50 min. From Syracuse: ~133 km, ~2h 30 min.
~13:30Arrive Agrigento area. Lunch on Via Panoramica dei Templi (restaurants near the park entrance). Do not enter the archaeological site now — wait for late afternoon.
14:00Check in Villa Palmi (conf 6751.558.452, PIN 2602). Rest. Pool if available. This is a planned rest window — use it.
17:30Depart Villa Palmi → Valle dei Templi (5 min drive). Open until 20:00 in summer, last entry ~19:00. Walk-up fine. ~€15/adult, kids under 18 free.
17:45Temple of Concordia — one of the best-preserved Greek temples on earth (440 BC). More complete than the Parthenon. In the long evening light the amber limestone glows orange-gold. This is the moment of the Sicily trip. Allow 30 min here; it rewards slow looking.
18:30Temple of Juno (Hera Lacinia) — hilltop position at the end of the ridge, dramatic views over the valley and toward the sea. The partially ruined columns cast long shadows in the late sun.
19:00Walk the Sacred Way — golden hour, long shadows across the valley. Temple of Heracles (oldest, 6th century BC, 8 columns still standing). Sacred lake area with ancient almond trees. Take your time.
20:00Dinner in Agrigento — Via Atenea (main street in town, 10 min from park) or a restaurant near the Valle dei Templi entrance. Tonight is relaxed — civilized morning tomorrow, no early wake-up.
⚠️ tomorrow07:30 wake-up. Depart Agrigento 08:15 for Palermo direct (Monreale dropped — no rush, no early wake-up). 115 km, ~1h 45 min via A19. Cappella Palatina 11:00 slot (booked — conf 172r06nvpwko). Pack tonight.

10:45Walk to Palazzo dei Normanni (5–10 min). Be at the entrance by 10:45 for your 11:00 slot.
11:00🌟 Cappella Palatina — timed entry 11:00. Conf 172r06nvpwko · show PDF tickets on phone. 12th-century Norman chapel with a muqarnas ceiling (Islamic honeycomb woodwork) built by Arab craftsmen for a Christian Norman king. The cultural collision — Byzantine, Islamic, Norman — in one small room is unlike anything else in the world. Also includes Royal Apartments, Monet exhibition, Archaeological Area. Allow 1.5h.
12:30Quattro Canti (Piazza Vigliena, 5 min walk from Palazzo) — Palermo's ornate Baroque crossroads. Then Fontana Pretoria ("Fountain of Shame") — enormous nude classical figures that so scandalized the local clergy. 2 min walk further. 20-min stop.
13:00🥘 Ballarò Market (5 min walk) — peak time. Palermo's biggest street market at full energy: all vendors out, freshest food, best atmosphere. This is the street food capital of Italy. Sfincione (thick Sicilian pizza), pane ca' meusa (spleen sandwich — at least one adult must try it), stigghiola (grilled innards on a skewer), panelle (chickpea fritters). Allow 1.5h. This is not a quick stroll — it's lunch and an experience.
12:30Lunch: eat your way through the market. Graze. Budget €8–12/person for street food lunch. One of the cheapest and best meals of the trip.
14:30Check into room. Mandatory siesta. 33–38°C. 07:30 wake-up today, 05:30 tomorrow — rest now.
17:00Optional evening walk: Chiesa di San Cataldo (10 min walk) — three red Arab-style domes on a tiny Norman church, one of Palermo's most photographed images. Free exterior. Or simply walk the Kalsa neighborhood as the city cools down.
19:00Early, easy dinner near apartment. Keep it within walking distance. Nothing elaborate tonight.

13:30Walk to Vatican Museums entrance (Via di Porta Angelica) and queue for your 14:00 timed entry slot.
14:00Vatican Museums guided tour (conf 2L2N0N1T3TTG95HGJ). Guide leads you through the Raphael Rooms → Gallery of Maps → Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel ceiling (Michelangelo, 1508–1512): tilt your head back and look at the Creation of Adam, The Last Judgment on the far wall. This is one of the things you must see once in your life. Allow 2–2.5h total.
16:30St. Peter's Basilica — exit through the Vatican Museums directly into the basilica (free entry). The scale is disorienting: Michelangelo's Pietà is behind glass on the right as you enter. Climb the dome if energy allows (€8 with elevator, €6 on foot — 551 steps, but the roof terrace view over Rome is extraordinary). Allow 1–1.5h.
18:30Taxi or bus back to hotel. Quick dinner in the Testaccio or Trastevere neighborhood (15-20 min from hotel) — or near the Colosseum for something convenient. Trastevere has narrow lit alleys and excellent food; budget €20–30/person.
21:00Night walk — Trevi Fountain + Piazza Navona (if energy holds — Rome at night is worth the effort). Trevi at night: dramatically lit, the water noise filling the piazza. Throw the coins. Then walk 10 min to Piazza Navona — Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers lit up, street artists, gelato vendors. This is Rome at its most cinematic.

11:30Taxi or metro to the Pantheon (~15 min from the Forum). Walk from the metro stop through the Largo di Torre Argentina cat sanctuary — Roman ruins with a live cat colony. Kids can see the cats through the fence.
12:00Pantheon (booking 26015961) — 126 AD, the best-preserved ancient building in Rome. The oculus (9m hole in the dome) is the only light source. On sunny days a column of light moves slowly across the interior. The dome was the largest in the world for 1,300 years. Allow 45 min. €5 timed entry — no photos (enforceable).
13:00Lunch near the Pantheon — Piazza della Rotonda or the streets behind it. Avoid the tables directly on the piazza (tourist trap prices). Walk one block for half the cost. Campo de' Fiori (10 min walk) has good options and a morning market.
14:30Option A: Borghese Gallery (if booked — timed entry required, must reserve at galleriaborghese.it). Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, the Rape of Proserpina, and Caravaggio originals in a villa garden. 2h max (enforced entry limit). 20 min taxi from centro.
14:30Option B: Trastevere afternoon — no booking required. Wander the neighborhood west of the Tiber: medieval alleyways, ivy-covered facades, Santa Maria in Trastevere basilica (free, stunning 12th-century mosaics). Relax in the piazza with gelato. More relaxed than Option A — the right call if kids are fading.
19:00Dinner — last dinner in Italy. Make it count: a proper Roman trattoria. Cacio e pepe, carbonara, supplì (Roman fried rice balls). Trastevere has excellent options at all price points. Budget €25–35/person.
